Relaxation Massage reduces Chronic Back Pain!

Relaxation Massage reduces Chronic Back Pain!

Relax away your chronic back pain with massage!

How many times am I going to talk about back pain and massage?  The answer is, not enough!  Everyday we go through our lives and find some small or crazy way to do something to our backs.  Ugh, enough already!  Shoveling snow, raking leaves, picking up a quarter on the sidewalk, tying your shoe, bowling, sitting in a chair too long, the list goes on and on and on….!  Phew, had to get that out of my system.  So, how do we avoid all of this?  Unfortunately, back pain is a hard thing to avoid, however, there are steps to take to help lessen the possibility and reduce the recovery.  Following are some, but by no means all, ways to help reduce back pain:

  • Take up yoga, a fantastic way to increase flexibility and strengthen your mind and body as well as relax.

Read this article that is specifically about how getting regular relaxation massages help chronic back pain.

Massage Therapy or Medication? Which is better for back pain?

January 19th, 2014 by Tranquil Vibe Day Spa

Lower back pain and massage.

Massage Therapy Reduces Low Back Pain

Massage therapy vs the drug companies!  Massage therapy holds promise for low back pain!

Ahh, low back pain, the leading cause of physical activity limitation and work absence throughout the world.  I have had it, you have had it and probably every person you know has had it at some time in thier life.  Some people go thier whole lives with back pain.  The question that remains is, how do I manage my back pain? Should I take medication that can have serious side effects?  The list of side effects that the most popular drugs come with is scary.  There are far too many to list here, so check out these links to read for yourself, Motrin, Tylenol, Aleve and Advil.  These are just your everyday off the shelf medicines that most poeple use and they don’t even compare to the high end over the counter medications.

So, what is the alternative you ask?  Well, that is an easy and lengthy answer, but, with respect to your reading time, I will keep it short. There are many alternatives out there to help ease back pain and maybe even forego it.  Massage, yoga, staying physically active and fit, stretching on a normal basis and correct posture are just a few of the many avenues you could take to keeping your back healthy and happy!  Now, as I said earlier, we have all had back pain, so let’s focus on helping that back pain with massage therapy and its many wonderful benefits.

We all know that massage is relaxing and reduces stress and anxiety, but it also excels at reducing muscle tension, stiffness and pain.  Just think about all those times, especially this time of year, that you shoveled snow and then oops, there went your back.  Or the time you bent over to pick something up, or turned just the wrong way.  There are many opportunites that we invite into our lives to do something not so nice to our back.  So, now that you are there and your back is hurting, don’t turn to the medications, turn to massage and its multilayered healing benefits.  For some great research on this subject visit NCCAM.

De-stress you Holidays with a trip to your spa!

Five Reasons to Get a Massage during the Holiday Season

Tranquil Vibe Day Spa-Bloomington-Indiana-Christmas Massage

Don’t stress over the holiday’s give the gift of relaxation!

I ran across this great little article about how massage therapy can help get rid of holiday stress and knew that I needed to share this with you!  The first thing that came to my mind was Black Friday and that giant whirlwind that goes with it!  Then I thought about all the traveling that people do, or even worse, all the cleaning that is done with the expectation that you are going to have a lot of visitors in your house.  Whatever your plans are for the holidays, just remember to be thankful for everything that you do have and for the people that are in your lives.  Yeah, I know, sometimes that perspective gets skewed a little, stress does that.  Don’t let stress bring your holidays down, make sure you take some time out to de-stress with a massage, so, enjoy the article and then plan some me time!

Can Massage at a day spa help with weight loss?

November 2nd, 2013 by Tranquil Vibe Day Spa

Massage Therapy, a great addition to your weight loss plan!

Ok, here is a hot topic, weight loss!  I can’t even tell you how many times this conversation has come up and how many different answers there are to it, let me just say this, it never stops!  Phew!  The good news is that you don’t have to try every single system out there or every diet, pick one that works for your body chemistry, commit yourself to it and stick with it.  The best news is that if you add massage therapy to your regimen, you increase your chances of success for weight loss!  That’s right, I just said, get a massage (oh darn!) and increase your chance of success for weight loss!  So, if you are still looking at this blog a little funny, let me appraoch it from a different way.  If you add massage therapy in to your weight loss/exercise regimen you have a better chance to be successful and this is why.  Massage releases several “feel good” hormones into your system, dopamine(makes you feel good and improves brain function), seratonin(a general mood enhancing hormone which also regulates body tempurature, mood, sleep, sexuality and appetite) and oxytoxin(another general feel good hormone also called the “hugging hormone”).  The ones that are decreased are the ones associated with short term and long term stress and those include; epinephrine, norepinephrine and cortisol, all of these tend to lower the immune system and digestive and tissue repair.  High Cortisol levels cause a number of issues such as high blood pressure, but for this blog, it causes weight gain.  So, why talk about Cortisol, well according to a recent study, massage was found to reduce cortisol.  Other studies have shown that regular massage reduces stress related issues such as high blood pressure and high Cortisol and helps keep them down.  So, bringing everything together, adding massage to your regimen not only feels good, but, helps prevent injuries, reduces recovery time from working out, reduces your Cortisol levels, decreases your stress and helps you feel better about the work you are doing!  Now, I don’t know about you, but, the way I look at it is this, massage is not only a great reward for working hard, it is essential to keeping in great shape for your mind and body! What makes a good massage therapist?

October 26th, 2013 by Tranquil Vibe Day Spa

What to look for in a massage therapist.

By Eric Linder

couples3

What makes a good massage therapist?  That is a great question!  Or better yet, what makes any massage therapist a good vs a great therapist?  Is it the school they went to?  Is it the location they work at?  The product they use?  In reality, it is a combination of everything that makes time spent with that professional a good, bad or a great experience. But, there are a few key factors that really make the best professionals stand out, personality, passion and professionalism.  Now, you may ask why I choose these 3 factors, let me explain.  In our everyday encounters with people, we are always sizing up the other person and visa versa.  We are constanly figuring out who has a personality that works with ours, that makes us feel comfortable, safe and secure.  We feel more relaxed, less stressed and less on gaurd when we are around people that mesh well with our own personalities.  Now, about passion.  What is life without passion?  Passion for something creates an intense authenticity for whatever we are doing, whether it be a simple hobby, running a business, expressing your artistic self or being a massage therapist.  You can always tell when someone is passionate about what they do, there is a certain drive and intensity about what they do and how they do it.  For a massage therapist, it all comes through thier touch.  How many times have you had massage therapy and didn’t tell the massage therapist everything that needed to be worked on, yet they found it anyway.  How many times your massage therapist knew just where to go and just what to do and you walked out of those sessions feeling amazing.  Passion helps fuel the things that we do and tunes our focus to pitch perfection.  Now, about professionalism.  In my many years of being a manager and now a business owner, this is the one thing that anyone can learn, practice and succeed at.  Why then, is it one of the most ignored?  You can’t change your personality, you might be able to ignite some passion for what you are doing, but, anyone can be professional and if you don’t know how, you can definately learn.  Day spa’s should be a professional environment, just the same for salon’s and any other establishment.  But, why are there so many that aren’t?  Massage therapy isn’t a hippy movement, it is a profession.  So, the only conclusion that I can come to is that people choose not to be professional.  Unfortunately, this leaves the client in a spot with having to sometimes experience a less than great massage.  The choices that individuals and businesses make directly affect thier clients and in the end, thier own business.  We chose to build our day spa with a professional environment and staff it with massage therapist’s who have great personalities, that work well with each other and with the clients and who are all passionate about what they do and where the practice massage therapy.  We invite anyone and everyone to enjoy our day spa experience and see for yourself.  Our goal is to become the best day spa in Bloomington, Indiana and the surrounding county through those 3 key factors, personality, passion and professionalism.

How massage can help your heart!

October 20th, 2013 by Tranquil Vibe Day Spa

Stress Management

Unhealthy Stress

UnHealthy Stress, the #1 killer, is constantly striving to raise your blood pressure, cause headaches and reduce your ability to fight off the flu.  More importantly though, it is trying to damage your cardiovascular system and overwork your heart.  Many things in our lives create this stress, what I like to call our “personal whirlwind”. Everyday we come across challenges at home, at work or just out in the world that push at our stress thresholds.  Sometimes these challenges punch through our stress management system and make us feel like a real punching bag.  Battered and bruised from one too many stresses can place our system into a “fight or flight” mode, raising our heart and breathing rate and cause our blood vessels to narrow.  If left unchecked and this becomes the normal for your daily life then high blood pressure, anxiety or hypertension may kick in, leading to even bigger issues such as heart attacks or strokes and possibly even death.

~Ok, now take a breath, close your eyes and envision gentle waves rolling into a beach, the gentle swish of the waves caresses your ears as the smell of the ocean air awakens your senses and takes you away from everything.  The warmth of the sun awakening your skin making you feel alive and comforted all at once.  As you summon this relaxing oasis to your mind, you feel your heart slow, your headache vanish, your face relax and you start to feel good again.~

Massage Therapy and how it reduces anxiety!

How Massage Therapy can help Anxiety!

Anxiety is a general term for several disorders that cause nervousness, fear, apprehension, and worrying. These disorders affect how we feel and behave, and they can manifest real physical symptoms. Mild anxiety is vague and unsettling, while severe anxiety can be extremely debilitating, having a serious impact on daily life.

a very anxious and stressed man

People often experience a general state of worry or fear before confronting something challenging such as a test, examination, recital, or interview. These feelings are easily justified and considered normal. Anxiety is considered a problem when symptoms interfere with a person’s ability to sleep or otherwise function. Generally speaking, anxiety occurs when a reaction is out of proportion with what might be normally expected in a situation.

Now, with that being said, how can you get manage or get rid of anxiety with Massage Therapy?  Great question!  Massage has been clinically shown to reduce anxiety and help to alleviate future anxiety with continued sessions.  Don’t take my word for it though, see what the experts have to say about it!

The history of massage therapy!

August 30th, 2013 by Tranquil Vibe Day Spa

Where and When did massage come from?

When the subject of massage is brought up, few people really understand the impact that it has had on society and the world in general.  For instance, western civilization, more specifically the United States, has for the longest time, in the name of pharmaceuticals and modern medicine, pushed massage therapy to the dark corners of mysticism and skepticism.  Fortunately, the pendulum has swung back to shed a positive light on massage therapy and its many benefits for people.  The medical community is starting to come around to see massage as not only a complimentary service for many hospitals, but, as a stand alone treatment as well.  The drug companies, it seems, will doubtfully back something that competes with their many medications.  But, I digress, back to the history of massage!  So, where did it all start?  To be honest, no one really knows the exact start date of massage, that is because it has been around longer than anything from modern society, longer than the Statue of Liberty, London Bridge, the Egyptian Pyramids or Stonehenge!  Massage therapy has been around since the beginning of mankind, many thousands of years ago.  Now, as always, don’t take my word for it, see what the experts have to say!

A Brief History of Massage
By Robert Noah Calvert

Note: The late Robert Noah Calvert authored The History of Massage: An Illustrated Survey from Around the World (Healing Arts Press, 2002). He founded Massage Magazine in 1985 and served as its president until 2005, also founding the World of Massage Museum in 2000. With more than 25 years of experience as a massage therapist, publisher, researcher and educator, his work appeared in numerous publications, including Body, Mind & Spirit MagazineMassage & Bodywork and the Journal of Higher Education. At the time of his death in April 2006, he was working on three massage-related books.

These observations on massage were submitted to ABMP by the author just a few days before his death.

Massage…is a very ancient form of treatment, so ancient that one may consider its history to be as old as that of mankind and its beginnings prehistoric.
-Dr. Emil A.G. Kleen, Massage and Medical Gymnastics, 1921.

A Massage History Perspective
  • The history of massage is much more than its association with medical practice. Its history is richly connected with many other human activities and spans the entire globe as well as all of the human historic record.
  • Western massage is not new — it did not begin with Peter Ling of Sweden, as is commonly believed, and it did not replace the ancient ways. Western massage began about 480 B.C.E. when Hippocrates of Cos changed the ancient shamanic ways of rubbing down and out the body to one of rubbing up and toward the alimentary tract. Since then, both have survived, often alongside one another, in practice.
  • Prior to the late 19th and early 20th century, massage was commingled with a variety of other healing methods. Only then did it finally emerge as a single stand-alone therapeutic tool.
  • The history of massage is not something one can easily learn about from other texts. It has been largely obscured from the annals of medicine, sports, nursing, midwifery, barbering, shamanism, anthropology, archaeology and other specialized areas of study. Finding evidence of massage in human history has been and continues to be a challenge.
  • Finally, and perhaps most important, is that the history, study and practice of massage are not all about technique. Their past, unraveling their entanglement with other human activities, clearly reveals the application of caring human touch is an inherently innate behavior for giving and receiving love, which all humankind wants and needs. The real purpose of giving massage is to foster more depth of feeling for one another in order to bring out the love that often lies buried beneath the pain of everyday suffering.
    —RNC

Touch Part of Human Social System

The history of massage and the evolution of human touch are intertwined with human history. Since prehistoric time, touch has been an integral part of the primate social system, initially as an element of grooming behavior. During the long transition from primate grooming behavior to human contact systems, touch took on other social characteristics. As human beings evolved to develop organized civilizations, touch was transformed into a variety of behavioral modes and touch methods. Touch became more complex, eventually becoming structured manual art therapies. But before touch was formalized it was first a part of social interactions — between friends, between mother and child — as well as simply basic healing of one’s self and others.

Can massage cure?

Los Angeles Times

You lie on the crisp white sheet of the massage table in semidarkness. The scent of almond oil fills the air. Then come the hands, gently kneading the necklace of knots that rings your back, your neck, your shoulders. You close your eyes, breathe deeply and let yourself relax. Beyond the pleasures of the moment, though, are there medical benefits to massage?Hospitals and medical clinics around the United States are beginning to integrate massage into patient care. Massage is currently the most common nontraditional therapy offered in U.S. hospitals, according to an American Hospital Association survey in 2003. The most common uses for massage in hospitals: helping patients cope with pain and stress, and as a therapeutic service for cancer and maternity patients.

Massage Therapy as “medicine”.

Massage therapy as “medicine”

By Eric Linder, Tranquil Vibe Day Spa

How many times have you had a sore back, stiff neck, tired legs or just a plain ole’ headache?  Along with those aches and pains, how many times did you take some sort of medication to “ease” the pain and suffering? Now the better question would be this, how many times do you get a massage to not only manage, but possibly get rid of your daily pains and aches?  There are some great studies out there that are showing the field of medicine coming more inline with what we have known for centuries, massage therapy can actually heal what those pills only mask.  Here is a great Health Magazine article that cites from several major sources about the health benefits of Massage Therapy as well as several links of interest:

Massage Therapy and how it benefits you!

Massage therapy and how it benefits you.

Massage Therapy is a subject of great debate in all circles.  Unfortunately, it has been an uphill battle against the medical community for over a century (since “modern medicine” came into play that is) to establish a foothold in the arena of health and wellness.  If this all sounds combative, well, that is because it is.  The community of massage therapists has labored to educate the general public about the benefits of massage and all of its associated therapies and practices.  The medical and pharmaceutical industry has been a constant naysayer about the practice of massage and its “benefits”.  Why would anyone need a pill to ease headaches if they had a massage?  Why would anyone need to take high blood pressure medicine if they had regular massage to relieve stress?  Why not lower your medical bills and enjoy a better life with regular massage!  Great questions, but don’t take my word for it, see what the experts and the actual research has to say about it.  Also included below are links of interest from the article.

Another great review on YELP!

August 2nd, 2013 by Tranquil Vibe Day Spa

H. T. from Nashville, TN. had this to say on Yelp!

I recently came in town for a visit, and my family and I really wanted to check this place out. As soon as we walked in there was a sense of peace- “tranquility” if you will. A certain calm takes you over that is really hard to describe.

Once we entered we were given a tour. Since we had never been this was a great way to see what they had to offer, and get a sense of what we would get if we scheduled an appointment. I personally had never seen anything like it. All the rooms are beautiful and well designed for multiple services at a time which only aides in the relaxation of it all. So once we were given the grand tour we had to get something done…it was too good to resist.

This place is amazing. We were able to schedule various services including: massages, a facial, and hydrotherapy session. Everything we received was amazing! They were very flexible with scheduling, and everyone in my family felt like jello when we left. Thank you all at Tranquil Vibe for such an awesome experience! We will be back very soon!

Thanks H. T. !

This YELP post just in!

Sara C. from Bloomington, IN said on Yelp:

I’m a complete newbie to the spa experience, but my visits here have been fantastic! I’ve had a facial, and now a hydrotherapy soak and a massage. That tub is phenomenal, I chose the first “Energizing” routine, and it was sooooo nice. It’s not very expensive either, so you really should just go do it, even if you’re skeptical! I think next time I’ll go for the stronger one, just to see what it’s like. The facials are great, my skin was pretty much glowing for days afterward, and the massage felt amazing as well. I’m pretty sure I dozed off a bit towards the end of it (haha). Also, I’m in love with their robes and tranquility room. So peaceful!

Amanda C.

Bloomington, IN

I just recently had a 90 minute massage with Lisa. One of the best massages I have had in town. She was very good and I’m pretty sure the  massage was not a ‘cookie cutter’ massage routine. Very impressed. I will be back.
Lisa took me on a tour of the facility and the place is very nice, not to mention they have the deepest hydrotherapy tub I have seen. Perhaps a facial is in my near future. 🙂
I must also add that the location is very convenient. I don’t like going downtown to get a massage because parking is a pain. Vibe Day Spa has their own parking lot. Also, they have a very nice outside sitting area with a wooded/creek view, something the downtown spas cannot possibly have.

Janet B.
Bloomington, IN

My work week ended with a hydrotherapy bath and a massage, and it was wonderful! That tub is phenomenal – very deep, and I wasn’t scrunched up at all. In fact, my feet didn’t even touch the other end! And they added honey aromatherapy to the bubbles which was great. There are jets all over – a bunch for your back and all the way down the sides of the tub.
When I finished the bath (20 minutes), I put on one of those fluffy robes and went to their tranquility room to relax for a couple of minutes. My massage (60 minutes) was with Lori who asked me some questions about how I was feeling and she focused on my problem areas (like lower back pain!). I was so relaxed by the time I was done I wasn’t sure I could walk!
The facility is awesome and you just feel the tranquility when you walk in the door.  The furnishings are beautiful with warm earth tones throughout. The ambiance coupled with an experienced staff makes this a truly pampered and exquisite experience. The next time I go, I’m going early so I can relax outside on their creek side patio before the pampering begins!
Believe me – this place is GREAT!

Tranquil Vibe Day Spa

Tranquil Vibe is aptly named. It is tucked into a quite nook along side a wooded creek with a tranquil and relaxing environment. The spa is elegantly decorated with calming music and top notch spa equipment. I was greeted by the friendly staff that showed me around the facility while explaining all of their services and answering my questions. This helped me feel relaxed and comfortable with my spa choices, as it was hard to choose with so many wonderful service options. The hydrotherapy tub is an option I’d recommend for anyone to try in conjunction with another service or on its own. I felt like I’d had a 60 min. massage after 20 minutes in the hydrotherapy tub. It is a great way to get massage results when time is limited or easy to add on a tub soak while there for another service.I was also impressed with the line of natural skin care products the spa uses and offers. Lori and Monica took into consideration my sensitive skin needs when choosing products for my invigorating facial. My skin felt so refreshed after my facial that I purchased a few of the products at the front desk for use at home.I look forward to returning to Tranquil Vibe for future services. I would highly recommend it for spa services and products. This top notch spa facility is sure to please and impress you too.
